A Day in Vicksburg, MS

Well...this day proved to be interesting!!
Dwain and I got up and got on the road at 5:30am to drive to Vicksburg, MS where we would be meeting his mom and step dad to pick up the kids! They are coming back from their month long visit in Georgia :) We got there and got some lunch and then got to our hotel. After we all got checked in and settled in the hotel, we decided to go explore Vicksburg! We soon realized that Vicksburg, though a very historical town, has become a very trashed town! But none the less, we loved the sights we took in :)
Vicksburg is a big Civil War battleground and we went to the Vicksburg National Military Park. It is an 18 mile driving tour along the Union and Confederate trench lines! It was pretty amazing to see all the historical markers and the state memorials for the soldiers lost.
We got out of the car at one point and just walked along so we could read the markers and memorials that were up off the road
Dwain was explaining to Bo and Riley about the cannons
Boys bonding :)
Miss Abby found a tree to play on!
So beautiful!
It seemed like all we were seeing for the longest time were Union markers
Riley and Dwain walking up to another marker
Then we came across the Illinois state memorial...at first we didn't know it was just a state marker because it had all the names of all the soldiers. It was more like a coliseum! Then we realized as we were leaving that it was just the Illinois state memorial!!
This was the seal that was on the floor inside
Dwain was reading the names of the 7th Cavalry
Lynn, Bo, Dwain and Riley walking around
Abby was standing in the center looking up at the hole in the top as the rain was falling down on her! So cute :)
Finally after a long time on this "trip" we came across the Confederate markers!
And finally we found the Georgia state marker
It was so far off the road that Dwain hiked down in there to get a picture of it...so I had to get a picture of him down there off the road! You have to look real close...but he's down there! lol
We came across the USS Cairo which is a ship that sank here where the Mississippi river and the Yazoo river meet...it sank in 12 minutes on December 12, 1862. The brought it up in 1964 and put it to rest here at the military park
Here is where the galley once was and you can see some of the original wood still there!
The cemetery was across the way from where the USS Cairo was located
Looking out on the Mississippi and Yazoo river
After we were exhausted and covered in sweat, we decided to get dinner at Cracker Barrel...then Dwain and I took the kids out to a park to help run off some of their energy so they would get to sleep in the hotel that night!
Riley climbing the rock wall
Abby gave it a try :)
Dwain playing on the playground too :)
This park is pretty and I saw a sign that the community put it together for the kids to play on
A riverboat casino
Flood markers
Murals along the levee walls
